«…winks like something Gabriel García Márquez might have wanted on a LP cover had he joined the rock group Blind Faith» —The Sunday Times Magazine (UK)
«Moved by the traditional, but also drawn by the contemporary, Carles Gomila harmonizes both with a dash of technical agility» —International Artist Magazine (USA, Canada & UK)
My name is Carles Gomila and I’m a painter. I like poking around in gardens, but I mainly make paintings of my life, and make a living from my paintings. When I don’t make money I still keep painting, because that’s what I like doing anyway.
I have no hobbies, I can’t imagine splitting enjoyment from obligation. I don’t have timetables, I don’t like to disconnect. I’m always checking to make sure I’m complying with my minimum requirements of honesty, productivity and authenticity. I never manage it, and I’m happy about that: there’s so much still to do!
I was born on the island of Menorca (Spain) in 1978 and I from a very early age I knew I wanted to be a painter. I wasn’t always sure; there was a time when I hesitated between art and science, then I opted for what I think I’m best at. I have to say that although I studied Fine Art in Barcelona, my real training has been studying the great masters. I am and always will be an eternal student.
In my painting I follow the trail of the classics, that engagement with timelessness that fills bodies with such a vigorous energy. A tender but disturbing painting, atmospheric, vivacious, corporal, measured and elegant.
These days I collaborate with art galleries in Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, though most of my time is spent on work for private collectors. I don’t set great store by curriculums, I prefer to be judged for my works, not for who’s selling them.
This website contains my artwork and my notes on art. It’s an exercise in sincerity which I hope will revive your curiosity about artistic creation, and explain the adventures of my works before finding a home.
